British philosopher and social activist, "the most systematic British absolute idealist and, with F.H. Bradley, the leading British defender of absolute idealism" (Cambridge Dict. of Phil.). This work first published in 1898. In reviewing Pfannenstil's book on Bosanquet, Michael Oakeshott claimed: "this co-called Idealist theory of the State is the only theory which has paid thoroughgoing attention to all the problems which must be considered by a theory of the State, and at the same time is a theory which has yet to receive a satisfactory statement" (1936). On the other hand, Bradley, Green, and Bosanquet lived in their own philosophical world. "He had his antipathies. He was repelled and not attracted by the intuitionist principle of Bergson and he was unable to see any matter of philosophical interest in the Einstein theory" (Wildon Carr, obituary).
