Eliot's note for line 210

The currants were quoted at a price 'carriage and insurance free to London'; and the Bill of Lading, etc. were to be handed to the buyer upon payment of the sight draft.

Commentator's note

Don't expect any useful information from this. Eliot was probably just showing us some of his and playing a joke at the same time.

In fact, c.i.f. means "cost, insurance and freight."

Actually there may be something behind this note. Please consider whether Eliot may have included this note as a hint to an autobiographical basis to the poem.
