Mr. Eugenides
Line 209

As Eliot's Mr. Eugenides, the Smyrna merchant, touches upon sexuality and gender issues, a different Mr. Eugenides, Jeffrey Eugenides, the author known for The Virgin Suicides, does also. In Eugenides' novel Middlesex Cal Stephanides (formerly Calliope) has undergone a female to male transformation (well, actually Cal is described as a 5-alpha-reductase pseudohermaphrodite.) Eugenides also weaves in myth and a flight from Smyrna in his novel.
