Exploring The Waste Land
A draft page linked from The Waste Land, Part II

In the draft of The Waste Land

In the draft of The Waste Land Eliot had In the Cage (the title of a story by Henry James) as the title for Part II (instead of A Game of Chess). This was an allusion to the withered Sybil of Cumae in the Satyricon by Petronius. She was kept in a cage or bottle. The allusion to the Sybil was made more explicit when Eliot changed the epigraph from his original Joseph Conrad quote ('The horror! The horror!') to the Latin and Greek quote about the Sybil
